Lipitor Associated with Type 2 Diabetes

Lipitor is a medication taken to help manage high cholesterol by blocking an enzyme in the liver, which the body uses to make cholesterol. The risk is higher depending on the dosage, as well as for those with the classic diabetes risk factors: excess weight, high blood sugar, high blood pressure, or high triglycerides. A recent study found that in patients with diabetic risk factors, nearly half of Lipitor users developed diabetes.

Another study, published on January 9, 2012 by the medical journal Archives of Internal Medicine, analyzed a possible correlation between statin use in women and type 2 diabetes. Statins are a type of cholesterol-lowering medication, and include Lipitor, Levacor, Zocor, Pravachol, Crestor and more.

The researchers studied 161,808 women between the ages of 50 and 79 years old who participated in the Women’s Health Initiative over the course of several years. The study found that women who took drugs belonging to the statin class were 48% more likely to develop type 2 diabetes than women who did not. The researchers concluded that “statin use is associated with an increased risk for [type 2 diabetes].”

Since then, there have been two other studies, published in the Lancet and the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, which found correlations between statin use and type 2 diabetes.
